Health Status of Workers in an Iron & Steel Making Industry by Cornell Medical Index

Abstract
This survey was conducted to evaluate the health status of 7778 male workers engaged in an iron and steel making industry by Cornell Medical Index (CMI) from March 1980 until July 1980. Number of "yes" response of an individual worker was collected by each section of CMI.
Each number of "yes" response was standardized by means of Z scoring. Z scoring was obtained by the following formula.
Z= 50+ 10 (Xi -m) /a
m : mean of "yes" response by each section for all subjects. a : standard deviation of the mean.
Xi : number of "yes" response by each section in the individual worker.
The results obtained are as follows; In the age range 19 and below, somatic and psychic complaints show higher score than mean score level; especially the latter has a higher score than the former.
The married workers show higher score than the unmarried in the somatic complaints; on the other hand, in the psychic complaints, the score is contrary to each other. In case bath complaints are included, the unmarried show higher score than the married.
The workers who graduated from the high school and technical college show the score similar to the mean. And, while the workers who graduated from the middle school or below show high score in the somatic complaints, especially in the digestic tract, college graduates show low score in both the somatic and psychic complaints.
Three-shift workers show high score compared to normal workers in the somatic and psychic complaints (especially in the psychic complaints). Thereforeresp Therefore respiratory system, digestic tract and cardiovascular system related closely with the psychic complaints should be treated as more important than any other items for shift workers.
In view of the work duration, workers who have been employed for less than 3 years show higher score in the psychic complaints than in the somatic complaints. The workers with more than 5 years¢¥ duration show high score in the somatic complaints; On the other hand, the workers with short work duration show high score especially in the skin and inadequacy.
Technical workers in the iron and steel making field top the score, followed by ones in the chemical work field, and then by ones in rolling work field. On the other hand, the score of respiratory system of the workers in the iron and steel making field is higher than in any other fields.
